Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble; my eye wastes away with grief, yes, my soul and my body! . . . No temptation [or trial, or testing] has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted [or tried, or tested] beyond what you are able, but with the temptation [or trial, or testing] will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it . . . In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ . . . And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance . . . Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution . . . But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers [servants] of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses . . . Revive me, O LORD, for Your name’s sake! For Your righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.
